Location: ASU-SearcyThe Arkansas State Board of Nursing has granted full approval to the Practical Nursing program. The Practical Nursing Program prepares individuals for the practice of Licensed Practical Nursing. To become an LPN, an individual must successfully complete all of the courses and pass the National Council Licensure Examination.
The program integrates clinical experience with classroom theory. The students obtain clinical experience in hospitals and nursing homes. Following completion of all requirements, LPNs may find work in a variety of situations. For example, graduates of this program are now employed in hospitals, nursing homes, doctors offices, public health departments, and various government programs.
Program start dates and graduation dates are dependent upon whether you are attending the day program or the night program. Specific dates may be obtained from the Student Services Office on the Searcy campus.
Applicants seeking admission to the Practical Nursing program may be requested to participate in specific pre-enrollment assessments to fulfill university or external agency requirements. In addition, certain prerequisites, such as immunizations, may have to be satisfied prior to enrollment in programs.
Practical Nursing students must show proof of two MMR inoculations, an up-to-date tetanus, and a negative TB skin test. They must meet the general admissions requirements plus take the Wonderlic and complete the nursing questionnaire.
Accepted students will be required to follow the Hepatitis B policy. Hepatitis B policy forms will be given to the student on orientation day. A drug screening will be conducted during each semester. If at any time during the school year there is suspicion of drug use, a drug screen will be required at the schools expense. If a student tests positive for drug use at any time during the school year, the student will immediately be terminated from school and receive failing grades in all currently enrolled courses. A student terminated from school because of a positive drug test will have specific requirements to fulfill before they can re-enter the nursing program.
Additional information specific to the Practical Nursing program, such as conditions for reentry, is available in the Nursing Handbook.
CLASSROOM AND HOSPITAL SCHEDULE
Practical Nursing students spend the first term of the program in classroom sessions from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. During the remaining weeks, the students are in clinical practice at Central Arkansas Hospital, White County Medical Center, Beverly Health and Rehabilitation, Byrd Haven Nursing Home and Oakdale Nursing Facility three days a week.Students will also spend two days a week in classroom study on the Searcy campus. The majority of clinical experience is during the day (Tuesday - Thursday, 6:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.); however, the students may have two to five weeks on evening duty (Wednesday - Friday, 2:45 p.m. - 11:15 p.m.) and one to two weeks on night duty (Monday - Wednesday, 10:45 p.m. - 7:15 a.m.) for the day program. The part-time evening program will have an evening and day clinical rotation schedule.
WITHDRAWALS AND RE-ENTRIES
Students withdrawing from training must report to the ASU-Searcy Office of Student Services so that proper steps can be taken for the interruption of training. A student officially withdrawing from training due to hardship or illness may be considered for re-enrollment at the appropriate time in the curriculum with the approval of the Director of Student Services, if there is room in the class. A student may re-enter a program in some instances. The Director of Student Services and the instructor(s) in the training area must approve the re-entering of students. A student may apply for re-entry into the Practical Nursing program a maximum of three times.TOTAL CREDIT HOURS: 49
