When to refer:
Advisors should refer a student to an
appropriate resource whenever the context of the meeting is outside the
advisor’s level of expertise and/or comfort.
Typical referrals include:
-
Financial Aid Office
-
Disability Services
-
Counseling Center
-
Business Office
-
Residence Life
Creating a successful referral:
-
Show a sincere interest in helping.
Students in distress are often affronted by superficial shows of
concern. A sincere expression of interest can go a long way in
establishing the trust necessary for a referral.
-
Establish mutual decision.
Students are more apt to commit to a decision in which they had
input.
-
Clearly define the purpose of
referral. Give students a clear and gentle reason for necessity
of referral.
-
Help establish the first appointment.
Go ahead. Pick up the phone and call the referral resource for
the student. A student may be willing in your office but quickly
change his mind when he leaves. A quick decision may be the final
nudge the student needs.
-
Pick the appropriate time. Look
for cues in the student’s demeanor. Take advantage of an agreeable
moment.
